Mark I. Berson practices as a lawyer and mediator.
His practice focuses on family law, divorce, custody, visitation,
support and modification, will contests, property disputes,
personal injury, and civil litigation.
Education
Attorney Berson was born in Boston, Massachusetts and received his
bachelor’s degree from the University of Vermont (1965). He
received his LL.B from Suffolk University (1968) and his LL.M from
New York University (1969). Attorney Berson was admitted to the
Massachusetts Bar in 1968.
Practice and Bar Related Activities
Attorney Berson, listed in “The Best Lawyers in America”, was the
Assistant Attorney General, Criminal Division, of the Commonwealth
of Massachusetts from 1970 to 1972. He was a Board Member of the
Board of Bar Overseers for the Supreme Judicial Court from 2001 to
2005. Attorney Berson was the Chair of the Clients’ Security Board
of the Supreme Judicial Court in 2000 and a Board Member from 1995
to 2000. He was also a Hearing Officer for the Board of Bar
Overseers of the Supreme Judicial Court from 1989 to 1995. He is a
certified fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML).
Attorney Berson was the President of the Massachusetts Chapter of
the AAML from 1996 to 1997 and on the Board of Managers from 1989
to 1997. He held positions at the Massachusetts Bar Association.
He was the Chair of the Fee Arbitration Board from 1986 to 1987
and was a Board Member of the Fee Arbitration Board 1982 to 1987.
Attorney Berson is a Life Member and Louis Brandeis Fellow of the
Massachusetts Bar Foundation. Since 2001, he has been the Chair of
the Development Committee of the Massachusetts Bar Foundation.
Attorney Berson has also held positions in the Franklin County Bar
Association. He was President from 1987 to 1989 and on the
Executive Committee from 1995 to 1999. He was elected as the
Regional Delegate (Franklin, Hampshire, and Berkshire Counties)
for the Massachusetts Bar Association Board of Delegates
Community Related Activities and Awards
Attorney Berson was president of the Family Planning Council of
Western Massachusetts from 1974 to 1998. From 1998 to 2001, he was
the Chair of Tapestry Health Systems, Inc. He was the Chair of the
Greenfield Charter Commission from 1982 to 1984 and then again
from 2000 to 2002. In 1998, Attorney Berson was awarded the
Community Service Award by the National Family Planning and
Reproductive Health Association and the Margaret Sanger Award of
the Family Planning Counsel of Western Massachusetts. Attorney
Berson was awarded the Massachusetts Bar Association Community
Service Award in 2002. He received the Pro Bono Publico Award of
the Massachusetts Bar Association for Distinguished Service to the
Profession. In 2005, the Supreme Judicial Court awarded Attorney
Berson the John and John Quincy Adams Pro Bono Publico Award.
Military
Attorney Berson served in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1968-1974.
